On November 22, 2007 Scottish born, Ireland international Owen Coyle was introduced as the new manager at Burnley Football Club. Coyle took over a club that was finally stable on the field and led the team to a respectable 13th place finish on 62 points in the Championship. Coyle’s first full season in 2008-09 would be even more impressive as he led his team to a 5th place finish in the Championship and secured promotion through playoff victories. Coyle was a prolific striker in his playing days. After beginning his career with Dumbarton, Coyle bounced around to several different Scottish teams and even had a spell with Bolton Wanderers. Prior to joining Burnley, Coyle led Scotland’s St. Johnstone to back to back 2nd place finishes in Scotland’s second tier.

The club captured its first major trophy in 1914, defeating Liverpool FC 1-0 in the FA Cup final. The club’s first major league championship came during the 1920-21 season when they won England’s top flight after finishing second in the top flight in the prior season. After this point, league success would come at all levels of competition in England, but was interspersed with droughts in their form.

Burnley’s first game in the 2009-2010 Premiership will mark the completion of an astonishing turn around for a club that was on the brink of being relegated from the Football League all together in 1987.

Turf Moor – Burnley FC Stadium

The Clarets hold another distinction in English football that is surpassed by only one team. Burnley has played their football on the same ground since 1883, at Turf Moor. Only Preston North End has occupied the same ground continuously for a longer period than Burnley has been at Turf Moor. The stadium can currently hold 22,546 seated, though with Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League, plans are back in the mix to expand seating capacity to 28,000. Turf Moor has played host to one FA Cup semi-final. The game was played in 1922 and saw Huddersfield Town beat Notts County 3-1. The record attendance at the stadium was set in 1924 during an FA Cup 3rd round game as 54,755 saw Burnley host Huddersfield Town. Turf Moor’s North and East end seating stands were rebuilt in 1996 and are at current the largest and newest stands in the stadium. With its promotion to the Premier League secure, the Clarets hope to expand seating in the West and South stands to bring the stadiums total to 28,000.

This past spring (2009), the Clarets defeated Sheffield United 1-0 in the Championship’s playoff final to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Burnley has been up and down through all four divisions of English football in their history, earning them a unique spot in the league’s history. Burnley FC is one of only three clubs to have won a championship in each of the four divisions. In addition to their 1920-21 success in the top flight, they captured another title in 1959-60, and have captured the second division title twice, and once each in the third and fourth divisions.

Burnley FC has a rich history in English football that goes back over 125 years. The Clarets are one of the founding members of the Football League. In 1888 Burnley, along with 11 other teams, founded the Football League. In the early decades of the newly founded league, Burnley experienced success on many different levels.

Man City Football Club Facts

Of its 106 seasons in the Football League, City has been in the top flight (old First Division, now the Premier League) for 81 and in the second (old Second Division, now the Football League Championship) for 24.

For the 1892-93 season, the side — then named Ardwick — was a founding member of the Football League’s old Second Division. The name became Manchester City in 1894.

For "Sparky" Hughes, 2009-10 is his second season at City after leading Blackburn Rovers for four seasons — 2004-05 to 2007-08 — in the Premier League.

Blackburn’s best season under Hughes was 2005-06. The Rovers finished sixth in the Premier League and competed in the UEFA Cup.

Hughes also led Blackburn to the FA Cup semifinals in 2005 and 2007.

Hughes’ first job as a manager was from 1999 to 2004, leading the national team of his native Wales. He initially worked on a part-time basis while finishing his superb playing career, for which he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.

A centre forward, Hughes played for 16-plus of his 19 seasons — 1983-84 to 2001-02 — in England’s top flight. He is best known for 10 seasons at Manchester United in two stints — 1983-84 to 1985-86 and 1988-89 to 1994-95.

City won its second of two championships of England’s top flight – the old First Division – in 1967-68 and its fourth of four FA Cups in 1969.

In addition, Hughes is seeking to sign centre back Everton’s Joleon Lescott to bolster the defense.

Four excellent players have been signed in the 2009 summer transfer window – striker Carlos Tevez (from Manchester United), striker Roque Santa Cruz (from Blackburn), striker Emmanuel Adebayor (from Arsenal) and central midfielder Gareth Barry (from Aston Villa).

The side was founded as St. Mark’s in 1880. That’s when St. Mark’s Church added football to cricket in its sports program.

Manchester City Stadium

What is now City of Manchester Stadium was originally designed as part of Manchester’s failed bid in the early 1990s to host the 2000 Summer Olympics.

The stadium, also known as COMS and Eastlands, was built after Manchester was chosen to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

After the Commonwealth Games, the stadium was reconfigured for football. The track was removed. And the playing surface was lowered to accommodate a third tier of seats, which increased the capacity to 47,726.

The first Manchester City football match in the stadium that counted was a 5-0 UEFA Cup victory over TNS of Wales on August 14, 2003

But supporters are extremely hopeful that the Blues will break into the Premier League’s top four in the 2009-10 season.

Through 2008-09, City has two championships of the top flight (old First Division in 1937-38 and 1967-68) and six of the second (old Second Division in 1898-99, 1902-03, 1909-10, 1927-28, 1946-47, 1965-66).

City also has won four FA Cups (1904, 1934, 1956, 1969) and two League Cups (1970, 1976).

After finishing 10th in the Premier League in 2008-09, manager Mark Hughes is using the vast wealth of the owner (since September 2008) – the Abu Dhabi United Group — to strengthen the Blues.

Then in 1970, City won the first of its two League Cups and its only Europe silverware — the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

It has been a LONG time since the Manchester City Football Club was an elite side. And the stay in the rarified air was short.
